The UAE Golden Visa: who qualifies and how to apply in 2026

UAE Golden Visa — long-term residency to live, work and invest in the UAE

The UAE Golden Visa is a long-term, renewable residency route for eligible investors, entrepreneurs, specialised talents, outstanding students and other approved categories. Eligibility and evidence depend on the applicant category and the authority reviewing the case.

The Golden Visa is self-sponsored — your residency is no longer tied to an employer, and you can keep it even while spending extended periods abroad.

What is the Golden Visa?

Introduced in 2019 and expanded since, the programme provides renewable long-term residency. Unlike a standard employment visa, it can be self-sponsored and may allow the holder to sponsor eligible family members, subject to current rules.

Who qualifies?

The programme is organised around a handful of routes. The most common are:

Investors

  • Public investment or real estate — eligible investors may apply using qualifying investments or property evidence under the current programme rules.
  • Business investment — company owners and investors may need valuation, ownership, tax or authority evidence appropriate to the route.

Entrepreneurs

Founders of qualifying economic, technical or future-focused projects may apply with the approvals, valuation and supporting evidence required for the entrepreneur route.

Specialised talents & professionals

Doctors, scientists, engineers, researchers, and leaders in culture, art and sport can qualify on the strength of their expertise — usually with an endorsement from the relevant authority (for example the Ministry of Health for doctors, or the UAE Scientists Council for researchers).

Outstanding students & graduates

High-achieving students from top UAE and international universities, and exceptional graduates, can be nominated for the Golden Visa based on academic distinction.

Humanitarian pioneers, frontline heroes & newer categories

Distinguished humanitarian contributors and frontline workers are eligible, and the categories continue to widen — recent additions include content creators, educators, experienced nurses, and other specialised professionals.

The benefits

  • Self-sponsorship — no employer or national sponsor required at any stage.
  • Family sponsorship — sponsor eligible family members under the applicable rules.
  • Flexible travel — stay outside the UAE beyond the usual 180-day limit without losing your residency.
  • Long-term planning for eligible residents building a life, career or investment in the UAE.

Documents you'll typically need

  • Passport copy and current UAE visa or entry status
  • Proof for your category — title deed, investment confirmation, qualification certificates, or the relevant authority's endorsement
  • Emirates ID application and medical fitness test
  • Passport-size photographs and supporting attestations where required

Golden Visa categories, thresholds and evidence can change. Confirm the exact current requirements for your category before applying.
